Wavyleaf Silktassel - Garrya elliptica
The only tree-sized Silktassel in this small North American family, Garrya elliptica occasionally reaches 30 feet in height. The leaves are elliptical, evergreen, and have wavy margins; they are woolly beneath. This is a species of the Pacific coast from central Oregon to California where it grows from sea level to 2,000 feet, typically within 20 miles of the ocean. The male and female flowers are produced on separate trees and open in winter. The male catkins are long and narrow, the female shorter and more stout. The bark is thin and very bitter.
