Mounds Oak - Quercus x humidicola
Quercus x humidicola is a cross between Q. bicolor (Swamp White Oak) and Q. lyrata (Overcup Oak). Both parents are southern species, growing from the Carolinas to eastern Texas. Q. lyrata grows as far north as southern Illinois. Q. x humidicola is found in Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, and Arkansas. The name was original published and accepted in 1937. A white oak, the leaves are shallowly lobed and narrowed at the base. The acorns are much like those of Overcup Oak, with a cap that covers more than half of the nut.
