California Hoptree - Ptelea crenulata
California Hoptree grows in both the coastal mountains of central California and in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada where it shows a preference for growing in canyons and flats, often beneath an overstory of oaks. A shrub or small tree (to 16 feet), it is a deciduous species with compound leaves, each composed of 3 leaflets that are toothed, somewhat rounded and broad at the base. The small flowers are greenish and are borne on the branch ends in branched clusters. The fruits are rounded and winged, and nearly an inch in diameter.
