Blue Palo Verde - Parkinsonia florida
A thorny Pea Family member that is sometimes shrubby but can reach 30 feet in height as a small tree, Blue Palo Verde is native to southeastern California and southern Arizona. It grows from sea level to 4,000 feet, typically on sandy soils in open habitat, such as scrublands and grasslands. The trunk is short and narrow, and the bark is pale green and reddish-brown at the base; the branches are armed with spines. The pinnately compound leaves with short blue-green leaflets. Borne in short clusters, the flowers have 5 yellow petals, and the fruits are a 3-inch pod.
