Rounded, with a single trunk, this shrub or small tree may reach 30 feet in height. The grayish bark is striated, and thin. An evergreen Rose Family member, the attractive shiny leaves are oblong, up to 8 inches long, leathery, and toothed. The many-flowered inflorescence is borne on the ends of the branches. The white flowers have 5 sepals and 5 petals. The fruits are typically red, although sometimes yellow, and very fleshy. This is primarily a California species of chaparral and open forests. It grows from the coastal foothills to the Sierra Nevada and is often cultivated.
